Attention: The Jefferson-Scranton elementary school is looking for regular volunteers to come in and listen to children read.
According to reading specialist Julie Neal, there a currently only a few volunteer listeners, but they’re having great success in helping children practice reading. Reading aloud builds skills and confidence in reading, but there needs to be someone listening, she explained.
Volunteer listeners are needed for kindergarten through second graders from 9:30 to 10 am, and for third and fourth graders from 1:30 to 2 pm. No special skills are needed. Listeners can come every day, three times a week, or twice a week.
Persons who would like more information or to volunteer can call the elementary at 515-386-3178 and leave a name and phone number. Teachers will then contact volunteers to set up a regular time to visit and listen to readers. Neal and the students thank volunteers in advance for making time to help grow successful readers.
